I think it was way too slow. Too basic.

Boy, did I root for Sylvie (Tessa Thompson) and Robert (an incredibly charming Nnamdi Asomugha). Beautiful costumes and sets, great cast, bubbling world. With a few script adjustments, this could be excellent. I'd have loved to see more of Aja Naomi King, who lit up the screen as Mona; and even Erica Gimpel as Sylvie's strict mother. What was the dynamic between her and Sylvie's dad (Lance Reddick), who I also loved? The film could've benefited more from the interpersonal politics between those characters than it did from the music manager plotline with Jemima Kirke, for example.

The film was flawed with moments. A sweet love story that was trying to hard to be grown up. I lived in that time period and it was delightful to be reminded of my youth. However, the character development and dialog to me was stilted, forced and not balanced. The editing could've been tighter, it went from one scene yo another missing a lot in between. It felt like I had dozed off - woke up and couldn't figure out what was going on. What did I miss. I didn't fall asleep. I like the effort to make a clean cut film about the 60's and 70's without four letter words and drugs. It lacks punch.

Some parts were very good and well done, but overall, it was overly simple and cliche.
