It was slow and did not really develop the main character to a point where you understood or even liked him. You had sympathy for the female lead, sympathy for the Chief and his family. It also almost gave you a sympathy for the way so many settlers hated and feared the Indians, while presenting a mixed message that we were all bad and took away the Native American's land.
