The story line was contrived and predictable. I found myself rolling my eyes at the dialogue and forced emotions. I found the mother the most intriguing character of the story.

It seemed like a mashup of many other underdog movies with an Asian American twist.

It was a bit contrived, but made for a pretty interesting coming of age story from the perspective of Chinese heritage. The underlying story itself is not new, but there are very few mainstream movies that focus on Chinese Americans that it made this movie feel fresh and relevant. The acting was definitely lacking, but I appreciates the diversity within the movie and would recommend the film to anyone.

Excellent first two thirds of the movie, then it all falls apart.There is no indication the lead character has grown from any of what he experienced (or his parents for that matter). And the basketball version of a street fight to end it because nothing else had any stakes anymore?
