Matthew McConaughey superbly embodies the real-life Newton Knight who stood up for human rights in the time of the American Civil War and after emancipation. He even looks like him . Profound observations are made as in "we are all children of God" and "he was a good man, in spite of all the wrong that was done to him, he did not succumb to hate" . A movie that surpasses in its emotional impact .

I liked how it drew a great portrait of the Confederation years and did a great job of portraying the life during that time in the late 1800's.
