I did not read the book on which the film is based and perhaps this is simply a book difficult to translate to film. However, I found it difficult to connect with the character. Essentially I didn’t feel any empathy with him (despite the tragedy in his life). This is a film that does not seem to work on any level. If you are a fan of the book, it may work for you.

Sorry, we didn't enjoy this film. Way too long, and jumped all over the place. The story was hard to follow and didn't connect with the audience. Great cast was given horrible dialogue.

A little to long but you have to get as much of the novel into the film. A bit disjointed and hard to follow but it made sense at the end. Young Theo and His friend Boris's acting was very good and portrayed zest of life even in troubling times. Enjoyed the movie, would not recommend it for everyone. If you read the novel you may be disapointed in the movie.
