Too long, too oddly edited, the movie suffers from the narrative weaknesses of the source material. Too many characters, almost none fleshed out as they should be. But a few performances are as good as superficially written characters can be. Jeffrey Wright and Nicole Kidman, as well as the kid Theo, are great with what they're given. And the cinematography looks beautiful, per Roger Deakins.

Not sure if did justice by the book, the characters were cold.

It does move slowly along and would be better if shorter. The ending and surprises at the end was much better paced and the best part of the film.
