Adrift told a great story without getting boring, or too intense for too long, in any scene. Flashbacks cut into the present narrative to tell the story leading up to the encounter with the hurricane and the following weeks of drifting. Of course the audience knows coming into the film it is a story of survival, and if the scenes had been shown in chronological order it would have been ok but not as effective. Details and information from early in the narrative timeline were presented to let the audience know what was really happening in the later timeline supporting the overall narrative—giving background details relevant to the present—without distracting from the flow of the story. The hurricane scenes came as a shock each time, the sudden intensity giving us a surge of Adrenalin and anxiety, bring the story forward a bit more, then cut away to something calmer, so the audience didn’t get overloaded. The sailing was great, didn’t get too detailed for folks who have no interest in sailing while giving us sailers enough of a sense of sailing to get us on board the boat, right there with them. A great story, told well.

Amazing in it's ability to show you the truth, but at the same time the fantasy of what happened. Very interesting, with great cinematography. A harrowing tale of the will to survive...
