While it still suffers from the problem that many play adaptations suffers from in that it still can’t shake the “adapted by a play” tag off, Regina King’s direction and the performances of all 4 leading men are more then enough to elevate this film.

An early scene between Jim Brown and Beau Bridges character set the tone of the film. Cut me to the quick. I knew a fair amount about each of the 4 men, but not the emotion or inner struggle that motivated each of them to make the decisions they made. The dialogue was exceptional and the actors did each role justice. It’s sad that Sam Cooke and Malcolm X died at such a young age. There was so much more they could have contributed...which is perhaps why they were both killed. If I had one element to criticize, I would say that the film felt barren and much more like a play than a movie.

It was good it showed how the 4 really were in trying g to fight for their rights not only as Americans but also black men in a time where there wasn't any of that when there should have been
