It felt like it was based on a legend that would be familiar in another culture and assumed viewer knowledge. The missing pieces were filled in for the most part later, but a lot of time is spent wondering about the backstory. Due to the characterizations, I would not recommend taking younger children--the grandfather and aunts would be very disturbing. The music and animation are very enjoyable.
