Built on a similar premise as 90s disaster films Deep Impact and Armageddon, GREENLAND strips away the science, politics, and military layers to tell the personal story of one family trying to save itself from another extinction-level event. Unlike many disaster films of the past 25 years, this film puts the characters, the plot, and suspense at front and center while allowing the big effects to play in the background as secondary in nature so as to not overshadow the actors or the plot. GREENLAND toys with the darker side of what humans will do to save themselves from extinction but doesn’t explore this deeply enough before quickly resolving conflicts for its characters. There are promising glimpses of what could have been real emotional struggles facing each of the main characters, but unfortunately no satisfying delivery. Without this, the film is still an entertaining thriller, but more of the popcorn variety.

A great premise. I wouldn't call this a great movie, but it was a fun ride.
