A Monster Calls is ultimately a serious movie about a child dealing with the pain of potentially losing his mother to a disease. The way he deals with it throughout the story results in CGi fantasies involving a gigantic tree monster with an deep raspy voice which tests the boy mentally before returning to the real world. If you have dealt with familiar loss, this movie may move you. If not...

It's a good movie about loss. It starts off very rough with no real setup. The monster just appears and the boy acts as if he's seen the monster before so the audience isn't really introduced to him. After it settles into the story, it's a very good movie.

Hands down the storyline was very emotional and touching. If you dont know how to explain death to a child, then this is probably a good movie to show. On the other hand, I give it 3 stars because it wasn't completely horrible, but the small stories and animation really threw off the film. They served a point, which was also pointless if that makes any sense.

Good movie, but it was a bit slow for my taste. Great acting and overall message for a younger viewing audience.
