Movie was predictable. Protagonist was unlikeable whereas her friends were more likeable. Would have been a much better movie if a "R" rating was given so that more could be done. Movie will appeal more to high school students rather than the mass audience.

It was standard horror fare that reminds you of the Final Destination series. I wouldn't watch it again, but I did like the ending. The cafeteria fight scene with the "mean girls 2004" type of bully named Darcie (unconvincingly portrayed by Josephine Langford) set a ridiculous tone and showed an obvious inconsistency with the handling of the protagonist (played by Joey King) Clare's personality. The uncle (played by Victor Sutton) was never properly foreshadowed so we never have a real sense of Clare's father's angst toward him. I also felt that the death of Alice Lee's character Gina was a plot hole that didn't fit the box's narrative of the death of someone close to you. Sydney Park was entertaining as Meredith. In summation, this is just the typical horror film with good production value and bad storytelling that you can generally watch until the end, all the while wishing you watched something else when you get to the credits.Wish Upon gets a 4/10. Sadly, it could easily have been a 7 with just a few tweaks and five or ten more minutes of character development.

This movie had potential to add some valuable lessons about being careful what you wish for, but failed to do so on so many levels. It was poorly executed and poorly acted. It's a shame they took a decent idea and turned it into a teen drama. The movie was hilarious when it really tried to take itself seriously. At times where you feel the movie is going to get deep into the mythology of the core of its terror, it spits all that out for shock effect. The story ended abruptly, the motivations were highly impractical (there's even a scene where one of the characters chastises the main character for making silly wishes), the score was very basic and unconvincing, and there was literally nothing logical to fear. They really should have labeled this a comedy that you prepare for with a few beers beforehand. Whatever audience you go into the movie with they will make the movie significantly better than it is.
