strong performance from the 2 leads in a political gutpunch

I’ve studied the history and ethics of Guantanamo Bay in a postgraduate setting and am sadly familiar with the concept of “enhanced interrogation”; even so, the last 30 minutes of this film still felt like an open wound. Powerfully understated yet compelling cast performances make the story’s devastating (if not unexpected) climax that much more raw. The Mauritanian is a worthy entry in the ongoing conversation about not only the ethics of American policing and military enforcement, but also the integrity of the US legal system and who exactly it is designed to serve and protect.
