It was over the top fun period, full or color and vitality. Why I gave it four stars: They could've cut the mean girls stuff and just left in the mean mama thing- that was more than enough. Also in a film expecting people to understand the Chinese culture, it would have been better for the family to be Buddhist or Zen perhaps rather than Christian which detracted from the movie.

Overall I enjoyed the film more than I had expected. It had some really great comedic and romantic moments. Some of the wealthy eccentricities were a bit over the top and seemed dumb and pointless. But the overall movie was entertaining. I didn't love it but I also didn't hate it. I thought it was ok.

It's a pleasant movie and the acting is good, but the pacing is odd and it loses a lot of the interesting details that made the book a lot of fun - while opening up plot holes. Many characters aren't given a lot to do. I hope they adapt the next books as well, as they are more engrossing.
