I lost interest in the second act. I was annoyed by all the Shining references, as I've never seen that movie and there were so many references in the lead up to the 2nd key. It really drew me out of the story I also felt the movie was a bit too male fantasy. I began rolling my eyes towards a lot of it. I couldn't wait for it to be over honestly. Special effects were good but the story was awful

There's fanservice, there's popcorn fun, and then there's relying too heavily on pop culture icons to cover an obviously boring, generic and uninspired story. You can either blame the book or defend it for it's "commentary" on pop culture, but at the end of the day it's a movie that showcases a huge problem with modern day standards. It is a pretty well made movie and of course it is Spielberg so it is beautifully shot but if you really enjoyed the book then be prepared to not like this movie at all. There is not one scene that I can think of that was actually taken out of the book. I would rate this on the same level as Enders game.
