I thought this was a great movie.

It started out as a great story about a man who clung stubbornly to his principles. But halfway through the picture, Gibson abandoned his main character for way too many scenes of his "trademark" graphic violence. In fact, his cameras seemed to revel in the thunderous roar of canon fire ripping through bodies shooting slow motion fountains of blood. Then it's like, "oh yeah, back to Doss".

For someone that doesn't like war movies, I thought it was great.

Powerful, riveting, heartwarming, but way too gory.
