The film was a conventionally told gangster movie in many ways, even if the real life story was anything but. The acting was terrific across the board. Johnny Depp was brilliant, his best acting job in over a decade. I liked that it wasn't flashy, and that it tried to humanize Bulger a little in the scenes with his son. Violent and profane like any good gangster movie should be

Johnny Depp was great. The movie in some parts was strung out.

My expectations were set a bit high for this movie so it did not quite deliver. I felt the story to be very jumpy, moving from each major event in Whitey's life quite quickly, with very little, if not any, back story on his journey of how he originally started this life of crime. This would have developed his character a bit better than having him become a ruthless killer all of a sudden.
