Postmodernly Modernist. A calculated & effective melange of stylish, period piece references to cinema, literature, & music. Energetic, hedonistic, darkly funny, referential, & at times, blatantly anachronistic remix of an evergreen story. I enjoyed the film, its performances, writing, cinematography, & costuming, but at times it felt like so much of the film was desperately trying to prove the worthiness of the director, lead actress, adapted story, & feminist thematic underpinnings by being so intensely stylish at every turn. Still, I can't fault the effort & end result.
