Actually would give it only 3.5 stars, mainly because I could not hear/understand 2/3 of the dialogue. Not only did many of the characters mumble and not face the microphone when speaking, but also I think they did not speak standard (US) English, and I had no idea what they were saying. The movie, at least in the US, should have had subtitles. I thought the acting was good. The story was moving. However, I did not really understand the father/son/ motorcycle gang relationship or what was going on. Did the father run a bar in his house? Why did he "sell" his son?

I was beyond thrilled to see a contemporary indigenous film being presented and produced by indigenous actors/companies. I had never heard of this story before but was delighted to see it on screen. It was powerful but not heavy handed. I would have loved if the movie delved into Gen's history more and what happened after the tournament. Did he go to the Men's Nationsl Chess Tournament? That's what a good movie does, leaves you wanting more and asking insightful questions.

A crowd pleaser, for sure. Loved the little in jokes and meta commentary.

Really good story line and great entertainment. Don’t know why it’s rated R?
