An absolute masterpiece, Robert Eggers continues to deliver in a way that only he can. It was enthralling from start to finish. I was a little nervous it would be hard to understand the dialogue since I’ve only seen vvitch and lighthouse with subtitles but that was no issue. Everything about this movie was perfect and deserves to be seen and celebrated.

The Northman is incredible and gave me everything I wanted from this Scandinavian version of hamlet. It’s loaded with Norse mythology and kept me on my toes throughout its entire runtime. The action, editing, and performances alone are phenomenal. Can’t wait for round 2!

This movie feels like an epic introspection. Though the plot itself involves nothing of earth shaking consequence (a bloodfeud between petty chieftains), the energy to do justice to a Norse worldview is what sets this movie into a category of its own. Compared to The Witch and The Lighthouse, Eggers seems in less commanding control of this picture, probably due to the much larger scope. This means there are some movements from scene to scene that puzzle at times (Amleth heading back and killing all the guards at night comes to mind) but overall this doesn't diminish the excellence of the film.
