I enjoyed the chemistry between Britt Robertson and Asa Butterfield - they were cut together and I liked their characters (even if the Butterfield character wasn't too far removed from other fish-out-of-water characters). Their charm ensured that I enjoyed the movie as much as I did.Unfortunately, there's some real pacing and storytelling problems with the movie - such as it taking 50 minutes to get the kid to Earth... or having to get him into space to save his enlarged heart only to have him back on Earth in the next scene ready to get aboard a new rocket... why wasn't he sick back on the planet? Why not have the little shuttle just dock with the space station and they wait in low gravity for the next mission to Mars? Or the wonderful Carla Gugino and Gary Oldman suddenly knowing all about the boy's pen-pale/skype calls with the girl when they had previously shown he'd taken steps to make sure their chats were private. The instant communication between Earth and Mars technically bothered me but I largely gave it a pass as a bit of hand-waving to allow the Space Skype calls. Unfortunately, the film took other science seriously like the boy's bone loss and having to graft carbon nano-fibers onto his bones. But I'll give the movie a pass - it's more focused on a cute teen romance over hard sci-fi.So, I enjoyed the movie well enough. It's not a strong recommendation. My 3 stars is not meant to be overly negative. It's a movie I can give a tentative recommendation to - but not a "must see" for everyone.

Movie was a good drama. Was too much unneeded scenes. Not sure if this is PG-13 but sure. Overall okay movie.

Who's the idiot that thought a sex / sensual scene fit in this movie? Though it was mostly left to your imagination. This didn't fit with the playful, light hearted movie it was. Overall it was decent, sometimes corny, movie that my family and I enjoyed.

It was a bit cheesy - more of a love story than I thought it'd be, but the visuals and soundtrack were amazing!
