This screenplay was so bad. So much of the dialogue was unrealistic and felt so overly dramatic to me. The actors could not save it. I could not understand some of the stylistic choices of how it was shot either. Overall, I really wanted to like it, but it just fell so flat.

Didn't care what happened to any of the characters. Tension between the mother and father was over the top with way to much tension.

Boogie started off as promising as we were introduced to an Asian-American high school basketball phenom aiming for a big-time college scholarship and ultimately to play in the NBA. From the middle of the film to the end, however, the back stories and side stories, including his relationship with his parents, their relationship with one another, his anger management issues, etc. were just too much and ruined what started off as worthwhile.

I was really looking forward to seeing this as I was a huge fan of writer/director Eddie Huang's "Fresh off the Boat". Sadly, he decided to concentrate solely on the look of this movie versus acting abilities. Lead Taylor Takahashi has 2 emotions: smug or sullen. As the love interest, Taylour Paige is all fashion over substance and the late rapper Pop Smoke is an uncomfortable cultural cliche. I couldn't wait to Boogie off this mess of a dance floor
