The movie held up fairly well. It kept my attention, moved quickly and was very funny in places. But my overall reaction was split. Hailee Steinfeld carried the film superbly. She is an amazing young actress, a bona fide star in the making. She drew me to the movie in the first place and her performance didn't disappoint. But the actors' portrayals of most of the other characters were weak or even insulting, particularly the adult characters, who were cast as zoned-out, weak and pathetic. I suspect that's more the writers' fault than the actors. Why is that so many Hollywood writers seem to have had terrible childhoods and lousy parents, or at least assume that all the rest of us did? That attitude permeated the film and irritated me, even as I was trying to enjoy the film. Finally, the sudden-turnabout ending -- where the lead character suddenly and inexplicably has a complete change of heart -- didn't ring true at all. Life doesn't happen that way. A troubled teen -- she stole a car, binge-drank herself into a stupor, put herself in a perilous situation with a boy she barely knew -- doesn't just wake up one day reformed. It takes time, and often counseling, not just meeting the right guy.

It's a really funny movie. The edge of 17 definitely captured the essence of what it's like to be a teenager; The drama, identity crisis, jealousy, peer pressure, sibling rivalry, first love experience along with the joy, and disappointment that come with it were all explored in this hour and 44 min long movie. The immaturity, and uncertainty on how to deal with life and grief at that age, and the defiance of parents' rules and authority were not left behind either. If you are looking for a good laugh, and entertainment....or you just want to be reminded of what is what like to be a teenager back in a days, "The Edge of 17" is the perfect movie for you.

Entertaining teen comedy. No real twist. Just kinda goes through the motions of teen coming of age plot
