Riz Ahmed gives a solid performance in this distinctive story.

Although it got off to a slightly slow start, you soon became quite interested in the characters and their personalities and their struggles. The storyline was very absorbing, and you were rooting for Ruben to get better and find happiness. While the ending was bittersweet, it wrapped up well and in a way that still made you feel fulfilled. You'd have certain predictions about what would happen and sometimes you'd be right, and other times, not so much. It definitely kept the audience guessing. The circumstances also felt very realistic and believable.

Movies can only be accessed through two senses, and Sound of Metal demonstrates how audio can be utilized to full effect. Through innovative use of sound effects and often, lack of sound, the audience shares the experience of the protagonist as he struggles to adapt to his new life as a man who has become deaf. Riz Ahmed gives a nuanced, yet powerful, performance as the struggling drummer who must learn to adjust to his new reality.
